MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, July 12) - Police in Vanuatu have arrested more than 40 people on the island of Tanna for their alleged involvement in the burning of four ballot boxes last Friday.

They are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

A police reinforcement squad has been sent to the island to quell any disturbances related to the arrests.

A report from the capital, Port Vila, says a magistrate and prosecutor will travel to the island for the court case.

Radio Vanuatu reports the ballot boxes, under police escort, were ambushed on the way to airport.

A general election was held in Vanuatu last Tuesday.
