MINISTER’S SON ACCUSED IN NORFOLK ISLE KILLING

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, July 20) – The son of a Norfolk Island minister who was shot dead yesterday has appeared in court on the Island.

25-year-old Leith Buffet is accused of murdering his father, 60-year-old Ivans Buffett, at his office at Kingston.

He made no plea.

The court of petty sessions heard that the accused went to his father’s office, shot him and went home, telling his mother he’d rid the world of the evil one.

Buffett’s parents had been concerned about their son’s mental health since he returned to the island in April.

The island’s chief magistrate, on a conference call from Sydney, remanded Buffett in custody and ordered a psychiatric report.

The case is only the second homicide on the small island in the last 150 years. The killing of Janelle Patton in 2002 remains unsolved and there is a $300,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in that case.
