PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, July 29) - A container filled with school supplies has been donated to schools in Madang by Rotary clubs in Tasmania.

The supply included 260 boxes of books, 250 boxes of stationery supply, 120 chairs, 80 desks, 30 tables and filing cabinets and other goods.

Cathrine Levy, senior lecturer for PNG Studies at Divine Word University said the donation was made to help schools that had a shortage of stationery supplies.

She said schools such as the Awar Community School in the Bogia District didn’t have access to any reading material and it was initially planned to get the supply of books for Awar and for Rotarians in Tasmania to meet the shipping costs.

However, the Rotarians decided to give an additional supply of books, stationery and non-school supplies and this filled up an entire 25 cubic meter container, which totaled over a ton of material.

Levy said this had been a huge effort by the people of Tasmania in Australia and the community has been impressed with their generosity.
