HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Aug. 24) – The people of the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal need better treatment from the national government now and into the future to avoid repeating the problems they faced five years ago.

Outgoing Special Coordinator of RAMSI Nick Warner says although these people are on Guadalcanal where the capital city is located, they have been very isolated in terms of services and economic activities.

He says there needs to be regular shipping to the area to pick up people's cocoa, copra and other products to enable them have a decent life.

Mr Warner says other infrastructures such as roads are needed to assist the people involve in commercial activities.

He says it is evident that people want economic activities now that law and order has returned.

Mr Warner stresses that unless the government and aid donors give better treatment to the people of the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal, the problems they encountered few years ago will re-emerge within the next 10 to 20 years.

He says what had happened in the past five years was the result of many years of negligence by the national government.
