PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Oct. 18) - With over 9,000 confirmed cases, Papua New Guinea has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the Pacific region.

This was revealed at a three-day seminar of the Pacific Parliamentary Assembly on Population and Development (PPAPD) last week in Fiji, Suva.

Parliamentarians and representatives from more than 15 Pacific nations attended the meeting.

Member for Henganofi Dr. Banare Bun led the seven-member delegation from the PNG.

Speaking at the conference, he said, "Out of a population of 5.4 million, we have about 9,000 HIV positive cases in PNG."

He said the meeting was to discuss ideas and exchange views from other countries on ways to combat the epidemic.

He said the meeting was the first of its kind and was sponsored by the PPAPD with assistance of certain donor agencies like Unicef and others.
