WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, Nov. 1) – The Pacific Islands Forum says the Russian Parliament’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol on Climate Change is an important step towards reducing air pollution that threatens Pacific island nations.

The Kyoto Protocol sets targets for greenhouse gas emissions which many scientists believe are responsible for global warming, which is said to be the cause of sea level rise. Some low-lying Pacific islands, notably Tuvalu, are acutely concerned about global warming as the ocean claims more of their scarce land.

The Protocol must be ratified by the countries that together are responsible for at least 55 percent of 1990 global greenhouse gas emissions.
