PNG POLICE CRACK DOWN ON MOUNT HAGEN CRIME

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Nov. 2) – Mount Hagen police have intensified their night patrols in the crime-ridden Papua New Guinea Western Highlands city, cracking down on potential "hot spots" like night markets.

Highlands Divisional Commander Geoffrey Vaki said about 70 policemen would be divided into eight groups to cover different sections of the city.

Each group will be fully armed.

The foot patrols are between 7 p.m. and 3 a.m.

During the patrols, people they come across would be searched for weapons.

Mr Vaki said the initiative would be implemented in other provinces as soon as he is satisfied it is producing results in Mt Hagen
