INDIA TO HONOR TOP GOLFER VIJAY SINGH

SUVA, Fiji (Radio Fiji News, Jan. 5) - World number one golfer Vijay Singh is among 15 prominent overseas Indians who will be honored with the Pravasi Bhartiya Samman Awards this year.

According to India News, a jury cum awards committee made the recommendation for conferment of the awards.

The awards consisting of a medal and a citation will be conferred by the president DR A.P.J Abdul Kalam at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in Mumbai next week.

However, it's not known whether Singh will personally receive his award.

The Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is an annual gathering of the Indian diaspora.

Opposition leader, Mahendra Chaudhry is among several overseas Indians who have been recognized by the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas.

He has been cited for his contribution to government as Fiji's first indo-Fijian prime minister.

Other awardees include author, Vikram Seth and former astronaut, the late Kalpana Chawla.
