FIJI GOVERNMENT TO BUY TWO VESSELS

SUVA, Fiji (Radio Fiji News, Jan. 6) - The Fiji government will spend about $2.5 million (US$1.5 million) two buy two new government vessels - the first of which is to arrive in the country next month.

Transport Minister Simione Kaitani says the vessels, from Japan, will ease island transportation problems.

"We have a special plan to purchase two new government vessels this year," he said. "Already there is a provision in this year's budget of $2.5million towards that. The vessels has been identified by the officials last year and there has been some communication already been conducted with the dealer. It is very fortunate that the Ministry of Finance have already facilitated in the depositing of the vessels."

About 10 officers including engineers and captains at the Government Shipping Service will bring the vessel from Japan.
