NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, Jan. 22) – Mangoes for breakfast, mangoes for lunch, and mangoes for dinner; we have mangoes dropping on our heads and squashing under our feet in Tongatapu this month.

And at three pa'anga (US$1.50) a basket, there are enough mangoes for everyone, including the pigs.

Everyone agrees the 2005 mango season is the best since 1998.

Savelio Finau of the Research and Extension Division of the Ministry of Agriculture said that the bumper mango season in Tongatapu is due to the warm weather.

Mangoes favor warm sunny climates, and since Tongatapu has been experiencing very warm weather, the mangoes are plentiful, said Savelio.

However, the outer islands of Vava'u and Ha'apai apparently do not have a huge mango season this year.
