HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Feb. 2) – The Solomon Islands Central Magistrates Court in Honiara yesterday sentenced a former officer of the Solomon Islands Prison Service, Jimmy Ahi, to two and a half years in prison.

Mr Ahi pleaded guilty to demanding property with menace.

The Court heard that Mr Ahi of Kobito-Three at Bokonavera heights, on 11 October 2002 was armed with a weapon with two other persons and demanded property with menace from Patrick Sale Alasia and his family.

Mr Ahi, 32 is married with two children and was a prison officer when he committed the offence.

He is currently not working, having been interdicted when charged with the offence in October 2004.

The defense submitted that the defendant had taken responsibility for the offence by his guilty plea and had showed remorse.

In sentencing Mr Ahi, Magistrate Jane Hamilton-White said the court took into account his guilty plea, family circumstances, remorse and previous good character.

But she said the community demands that those who terrorize innocent and law abiding members of the public and removed their property at gun point be severely punished.

Ms Hamilton-White ordered that the two and half years prison sentence commenced on February 1, when the accused was taken into custody.
