6.1 QUAKE HITS OFF PAPUA NEW GUINEA COAST

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, Feb. 8) – An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has reportedly struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

Geoscience Australia reports that the quake occurred shortly after 6 a.m. PNG time and was centered under the ocean near the islands of New Ireland and New Britain.

A spokesman for Geoscience Australia said they are still awaiting news from the area but confirmed there had not yet been any reports of damage or injuries.

Officials at the PNG National Disaster Center in the capital Port Moresby were not immediately available to comment on the quake.
