PAPEETE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, Feb. 7) – Tension has heightened in the race between political rivals in the final week of campaigning for the Feb. 13 by-election for the Windward Islands 37 seats in the 57-seat French Polynesia Assembly.

A woman supporting French Polynesia President Gaston Flosse was assaulted Saturday in the Commune of Faa’a as she participated in a political motorcade organized by Emile Vernier, a union official who is member of the French Polynesia Economic, Social and Cultural Council.

Flosse was at the woman’s bedside in a Papeete clinic Monday morning after his party issued a communiqué castigating the incident, which the French Gendarmerie in Faa’a is investigating.

“This deterioration is not an isolated act,” the Flosse party communiqué stated. “Numerous supporters of Tahoeraa Huiraatira, but also very many ‘popa’a’ (French) and ‘tinito’ (Chinese) are complaining of insults and racist abuse. This climate that our country has never before known is the result of the campaign of hate organized by the UPLD”.
