KOROR (Palau Horizon, Mar. 1) — Palau has received $34,000 from Greece, according to Palau President Tommy Remengesau.

He said the Greek ambassador to the United Nations, Adamantios Th. Vassilakis, presented the check to Palau’s ambassador to the U.N., Stuart Beck.

Remengesau expressed his deep appreciation to Greece for its assistance to Palau’s government programs.

The president said Greece is among the 189 United Nations member states that pledged support for the U.N. Millennium Development Goals program.

"These goals are intended to help Third World countries and developing small nations. These targets involve such areas as the improvement of primary education as well as building social equality and opportunities for women," Remengesau said.

The U.N. program also aims to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger as well as combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

Moreover, it supports environmental sustainability and developmental global partnership projects.
