ALOFI, Niue (Niue News, Mar. 2) – The Niue government has contributed $150,000 (US$109,000) to a project to build a church and conference complex in Alofi.

The church that occupied the project site was demolished by Cyclone Heta last January.

About $85,000 (US$61,800) was raised at the weekend on Niue for the Ekalesia Niue multi-purpose millenium complex.

The multi-million dollar facility will include church offices, and a conference centre.

All branches of the church and its organisations such as Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade contributed to the fund at a ceremony at the Niue High School multi purpose hall on Saturday.

The Alofi congregation donated $21,000.

Church officials said the total was well above their expectations.

A large number of withdawals at the Bank of South Pacific on Friday had the manager worried that there would be a shortage of cash.
