HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. Mar. 8) – A new audit of government agencies in the Solomon Islands province of Guadalcanal shows widespread abuse of public money amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Solomon Islands Auditor General Augustine Fatai says the audit, of provincial accounts between 2000 and 2004, shows abuses by politicians, administrators and office employees.

Mr Fatai says he has given an opportunity for both the Guadalcanal provincial government and the appointed auditor to respond to the allegations.

He says he is yet to receive a response.

Mr Fatai says the allegations are serious and may need police investigation into the abuse of these public funds.

The new Guadalcanal Provincial executive says some officers have been terminated following the audit report.
