PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Mar. 10) - Villages in the Pangia District of the Southern Highlands province are being terrorized by four armed men believed to be prison escapees.

Community leaders from Pangia said the four armed men had terrorized and threatened villagers at Kalane Village in Pangia last week.

The leaders said they had reported the matter to acting provincial police commander inspector Benson Osil when he visited Pangia last Saturday.

The four are armed with a factory made gun, which they were using to threaten people at Kalane Village west of Pangia station.

The culprits are believed to be among the 32 inmates who escaped from the Bui Yebi jail outside Mendi last month.

To date none of these escapees have been recaptured, prompting fears that crime would be on the rise as these escapees steal from villages to survive.
