SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, Mar. 14) – The Fiji government’s newly purchased US$950,000 vessel, the "Iloilovatu," was accorded a full traditional Fijian welcoming ceremony when it arrived at the Government Wharf today.

Chief Guest and President Ratu Josefa Iloilo revealed the name of the ship in front of a crowd that included foreign dignitaries.

The ship was purchased from Japan earlier this year and was formerly a research vessel which first hit the seas in 1993.

"This new vessel will help ease the transportation problems faced by outer islands," Kaitani said.

Ratu Josefa later took the ship on its maiden voyage down to Lautoka, where the ship will be based.

The ship adds to the government’s fleet of ships, which includes the Tovuto and Natokalau, which usually services the Lau islands.
