NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, Mar. 30) – A special election to fill four seats in the Tongan parliament has been scheduled for May 3 and May 5.

Tongan election officials said Nobles will vote on May 3 and commoners on May 5.

The four seats were vacated after recent elections by the appointment of four members of parliament as cabinet ministers.

Supervisor of Election Pita Vuki confirmed today that the registration of candidates for the by-election will be on April 14, and the registration fee will be 200 paanga (US$104).

Two Nobles Representatives, one for Tongatapu and another for ‘Eua; and two People’s Representatives, one for Tongatapu and one for the Niuas will be chosen in the by-election.

As with the general election, there is no registration of the Nobles and no registration fees.
