NEW TONGA PARTY ELECTS LEADER

NUKU’ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, April 19) - Tesina Fuko has been elected president of Tonga's newly-established People’s Democratic Party.

Fuko was elected at a party meeting at ‘Atenisi on Friday.

Other officials elected were Kanongata'a Hausia as Vice President, Semisi Tapueluelu as Secretary, Sione Talanoa as Assistant Secretary and Kamipeli Tofa'imala'e'aloa as Treasurer.

Kamipeli Tofa said that following the election, the other most important item discussed was the formation of six committees to deal with a range of issues, such as politics, law, economics, social, education and research.

Kamipeli said that the PDP would meet again on Friday April 22 to elect officials for these committees, and to formulate PDP Policy.

The PDP is yet to be registered by their legal counsel, Clive Edwards.

Kamipeli said that the meeting was attended by about 20 people, including some candidates for the recent parliamentary election.
