NIUE’S TALAGI PULLS ELECTION OUT OF HAT

ALOFI, Niue (Niue News, May 7) – Former Niue Finance Minister Toke Talagi has been returned to the Legislative Assembly after his name was drawn from a hat today.

Talagi looked to have lost his common roll seat to Alofi South businesswoman  Maihetoe Hekau by a provisional two vote margin on election night. However a recount tied both candidates.

Justice Department senior official Mr Hubert Kalauni drew the name from the hat and the chief electoral officer  Togia Sioneholo announced Talagi the winner.

And in another draw from the hat, former Cabinet Minister Dion Taufitu of Toi Village lost his Assembly seat to  Lilivika Muimatagi.

All eyes are now on the election of a Premier by the Legislative Assembly members.

Political commentators say Vivian is predicted to be reelected; an alliance of independents seem not have sufficient numbers to launch a realistic challenge at this stage.

he appointment of a Cabinet and  Talagi's future in the top four adds to the island's political intrigue, say commentators.
