HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, May 9) – Solomon Islands Commissioner of Police Shane Castles says the conviction last Friday of former Deputy Commissioner Wilfred Akao and former Civil Aviation Director Michael Anita as an important milestone in the country.

Castles says although the convictions relate to crimes dating back to 1996, justice has not been denied.

He says Akao and Anita once held positions of power and influence in the community and that the convictions recorded against them should serve to reassure people that those who commit crimes against society will eventually be held to account.

The High Court found Akao and Anita guilty of the abduction, assault and rape of a woman in Honiara in December 1996.

Both men have been remanded in custody since Friday and are due to be sentenced tomorrow morning.
