FIJI JOBLESS ARE EDUCATED

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, May 13) – Government statistics show more than 77 percent of unemployed people are educated to the secondary school level.

The figures also show that 15 percent of Fiji’s jobless have a college education, meaning Fiji has a high level of educated people without jobs.

The figures are reflected in the Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics Household Income and Expenditure survey for 2002 and 2003.

The urban unemployment rate stood at 14.1 per cent.

Of the 279,381 people more than 15-years-old in urban areas, 164,309 were economically active or in the labour force.

The urban population at the end of July 2002 stood at 393,866, with Indians accounting for 49 per cent and Fijians 43.4 per cent.

Of the 20,957 people living in Housing Authority or Public Rental Board flats, 14,742 were Fijians.
