RATU MARA’S CHILDREN ABSENT AT FIJI RITUAL

SUVA. Fiji (Fiji Times, May 15) – Three children of the late President and Tui Nayau Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara did not attend the lifting of the mourning period (Vakataraisulu) on Tubou Village on Friday, raising concern among the many islanders who gathered in the Lau group for the special occasion.

Some said there was an understanding that the late Ratu Sir Kamisese's children and grandchildren would be at the village for the ritual.

Daughter and Senator Adi Koila Nailatikau said her elder sister Adi Ateca Ganilau and brothers Ratu Finau Mara and Roko Tevita Uluilakeba were not part of the lifting of their late father's mourning period ritual.

"I believe they are the only ones that could answer to why they could not make it," Nailatikau said. "I have been on the island a week before the ritual."

She said Adi Ateca was represented by her eldest son Ratu Kamisese Tuivanuavou Ganilau and his uncle Ratu Rabici Ganilau led the delegation from Lalagavesi with traditional gifts to the main village green.

A close family source on the island said Ratu Finau's absence was a sad day for the people of Lau because he was the eldest son and probably the next in line for the title of Tui Nayau.
