SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, May 19) – It cost the Fiji government $474,991 (US$282,800) to deport 228 illegal immigrants from Fiji so far this year, it was revealed in Parliament today.

Home Affairs Minister Josefa Vosanibola, in his written reply to parliamentary questions posed by Opposition member Perumal Mupnar, stated that 11 people were yet to be deported and were currently in prison.

"These people paid an immigration security bond on arrival and as such their repatriation costs would be paid from these bonds," he said.

Vosanibola said the illegal immigrants are detained at a cost of $20 per day while their terms of detention were at the discretion of the court.

He added that the duration in processing their travelling documents also determined how long they stayed in prison.
