WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, June 5) – A freighter with 44 tons of rice has arrived in the Solomon Islands Temotu province for distribution among the people of the Reef Islands who have suffered from food shortages for several months.

The ship has come from Honiara and will be in Lata, where officials join the ship for tomorrow’s journey to the Reef islands, where some people are reported to have starved to death.

Accompanying the food supplies are two teams of food security specialists from World Vision Solomon Islands and the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management office. These teams will collect data to formulate some long-term food security strategies for the islands. Mia Kelly, head of World Vision Solomon Islands, says she hopes her team’s findings will be useful in establishing strategies for long-term food security in the small islands of Temotu province.
