SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive) - A 35-year-old man was sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail for strangling his wife to death with a shoelace by the High Court in Lautoka today.

The court heard that on June 2, 2003, Rajendra Kumar of Simla first strangled his wife with a shoe lace. He then went in the room, got a radio cord wire, and strangled her to death.

In mitigation the convict said he couldn't see his wife suffer because according to him she was possessed.

Judge Justice Kishor Govind while sentencing said the man was supposed to protect his wife but he brutally strangled her.

The assessors found Rajendra Kumar guilty of manslaughter.
