PAPEÉTE, Tahiti (Tahitipresse, July 7) - The daily paper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reports that customs agents arrested four persons carrying 1,500 pearls fraudulently imported from Tahiti and Fcfp 440,000 (US$3,687) in their possession.

The Customs officers seized sixteen necklaces with 35 to 45 pearls each and pouches of loose pearls to the value of Fcfp 1.5 million (US$12,570) and the offenders got a Fcfp 440,000 (US$3,687) fine.

Among the four persons arrested, two Tahitian citizens admitted to own the pearls; the rest of the illegal merchandise was discovered in one of their hotel rooms.

The Customs service will soon summon the payer of three checks found on the Tahitians as he broke the law by purchasing three imported necklaces without declaring them.
