APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, July 11) - The village of Manono-uta in Samoa yesterday gathered at the residence of Futi Ioane to celebrate the launch of the village's second ‘fautasi,’[longboat] Telefoni o le Vainuu II.

Painted in the village's traditional colors, red and white, the 94-foot boat will compete in the Teuila Festival ‘fautasi’ race this September.

Nine carpenters and six youths from the village worked on the ‘fautasi’ for six weeks, said the leader of the carpenters, Reverend Fereti Sefo Leiataua, of the Congregational Christian Church.

Leiataua Vaivao Alailima, a member of the village committee, said that the Canada Fund, provided 70 percent of the budget.

This is because the ‘fautas’ will also be used to promote tourism and to take tourists to Manono Island.

"The villages of Manono will be focusing their progress through the development of the ‘fautasi," said Leiataua.
