FORMER SOLOMONS MILITANT CHARGED WITH FRAUD

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, July 21) – The former militant commander of the Malaita Eagle Force and Solomon Islands Member of Parliament for South Malaita, Alex Bartlett, has been charged with offences arising from a land fraud deal in 2001 and 2002.

The charges relate to the alleged fraudulent transfer of land in 2001 and 2002, and stem from a joint Royal Solomon Islands Police/Participating Police Force Corruption Targeting Team investigation.

Bartlett appeared in the Honiara Magistrate’s Court last Thursday where he faced a number of charges.

These include: forgery with intent to defraud, demand with menaces and intimidation.

The charges relate to a land deal of four hectares of beach-front property at Burns Creek.

Bartlett is currently on remand at Rove Prison on other charges and has been ordered to reappear in the Honiara Magistrate’s Court on 28 July 2005.
