GOROKA, PNG (Solomons Star, Aug. 18) – Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza and his wife were terribly shaken after a lift scare in a premier hotel in Port Moresby on Tuesday night.

A PNG foreign affairs spokesman said in Goroka yesterday that Sir Allan and lady Kemakeza were taking the lift at the Crowne Plaza hotel down to the lobby when the lift broke and fell, missing a floor.

The incident, according to sources, left Sir Allan and Lady Kemakeza stuck in the lift for over an hour while hotel staff scrambled to locate Otis Elevator to use special equipment to pry the lift doors open and rescue the pair.

PNG Protocol officers in Goroka were made aware of the incident yesterday and have advised PNG authorities in Goroka, including Foreign Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu, who is currently also in Goroka about the incident.

It is not clear whether Foreign Minister Laurie Chan was informed.

The spokesman said Sir Allan and lady Kemakeza checked out of Crowne Plaza and booked in the Airways Hotel after the lift scare.

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, his wife and his entourage will be traveling to Goroka today for the Melanesian Spearhead Group summit tomorrow.
