SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, Sept. 6) - Guam Power Authority is investigating the cause of an island wide power outage that occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday night.

The outage, which was caused by a short circuit in the Macheche substation, lasted for four hours in some places.

Art Perez, GPA public information officer, blamed the outage on trouble with the utility’s Macheche substation located along Route 16.

"There was a short circuit that caused considerable damage to the switchgear. That led to a default on the system, causing other power plans to protect themselves from damage and isolate themselves. This led to the blackout," Perez told Variety in an interview.

GPA started restoring power by about 1:30 a.m. Monday, restoring power to Nimitz hill and Piti.

"Then we were able to energize the lines going through Andersen Air Force Base by about 2 a.m. After that, we were able to bring in more base load generators. And from there, we were able to stabilize the system," Perez said.

He added that the utility’s fast track generators played a big part in restoring the system: "The fast-track generators were brought on line and they helped stabilize the system."
