HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Nov. 30) – It is now illegal to export dolphins from the Solomon Islands.

This follows the publication of the Gazette of the Fisheries Prohibition of Export of Dolphins Regulations 2005.

The Regulation prohibits the export of any dolphins of the general, stenell, tursips, peponocephala, lagermodelphins, grampus and pseudorca.

The Regulation says any person who contravenes the new law shall be guilty of an offence and shall be fined not less than SB$1000 [US$144] or sent to prison for six months or both.

Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Mathias Taro signed the new fisheries regulation on November 24.
