PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Dec. 28) – Residents of Nipinaka in Lufa, in Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands Province, are mourning the death of three girls killed by lightning last week.

The lightning struck six girls and a boy, instantly killing three and badly injured four others.

Two sisters and their sister in-law died on the Kemiahe mountain while a woman, two other girls and a 10-year-old boy were rushed to Goroka hospital.

Survivor Marina Ruben said they were resting on a hill while returning from the garden with food for Christmas when lightning hit them.

"We were shocked when lightening struck directly on us. It killed the three girls instantly." She said: "It struck us the second time — like it was searching for us. I was really frightened and held onto the grass while my three friends lay unconscious. Again the third lightning struck – it was like a torch searching in the grass where we were lying."
