HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, Jan. 1) – Nearly 100 passengers on board the [Solomon Islands ferry boat] MV Bikoi panicked when the ship rammed head-on the brick sea-wall at Point Cruz wharf yesterday afternoon.

Onlookers said the ship, packed with passengers returning to Honiara from Malaita province, failed to slow down as it approached for berthing at one of the Point Cruz jetties.

[A witness said] there was a loud noise on impact of the collision against the brick sea-wall.

He says the vessel's bow cracked open and passengers had to be off-loaded in great haste to save the vessel from taking in water.

Our source says about five passengers fell off the boat into the sea as a result of sudden impact.

However, he says no one was injured during the incident.

The Marine and Rescue Centre says they will be investigating the incident.
