MURDER, MAYHEM MARK BOUGAINVILLE NEW YEAR

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Jan. 3) – Buka General Hospital in Bougainville saw a host of new year celebration casualties, mostly alcohol related, chief executive officer Ceril Imako confirmed yesterday.

A man from Gagan was rushed to the hospital with a spear wound through his chest during the weekend. He is recovering.

Another alcohol related incident occurred at Kotopan, Buka where a man fell from a cliff and died.

The hospital reported other incidents involving patients with wounds caused by knives or other sharp objects.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead after he suspected another man of having an affair with his wife at Kerei village, Central Bougainville at the weekend. He later also shot his wife with a firearm. She is recovering at the Buka General Hospital.

Buka police Inspector Paul Kamoai said the man suspected his wife of having an affair and shot her with an M16 automatic rifle. The suspect is in Arawa police custody.

In other New Year incidents, a group of men armed with an M16 rifles and two Japanese-made 303 rifles robbed the Credit Development Assets (CDA) of some cheques in Buin, South Bougainville.

Also in Buin, a woman was raped at around 6.30 p.m. on New Years eve. Police are investigating.

Police also reported a murder case at Bana, South Bougainville where the suspect beheaded another man. The victim died instantly.

Inspector Kamoai said police have stationed 10 men at Panakei and Boku in Siwai to monitor the roadblocks and the U-Vistract situation.
