KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, Jan. 4) – Palau President Tommy Remengesau will be on Saipan, in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, to attend Governor-elect Benigno R. Fitial’s inauguration.

Senator Alfonso Diaz said he would also attend the inauguration slated on January 9. Earlier, Remengesau congratulated Fitial and Lt. Governor-elect Timothy P. Villagomez for their election victory and expressed hope that the relationship between Palau and the CNMI will be stronger.

The president said he expects Palau and the CNMI to continue working together. He noted that Fitial and Villagomez are long-time public servants who are very knowledgeable about the issues facing the CNMI and Palau.

After World War II, Palau, the Northern Marianas, the Marshall Islands and what is now known as the Federated States of Micronesia became United Nations Trust Territories administered by the U.S.

Saipan was the capital of the Trust Territory government.

With the exception of the Northern Marianas, which chose political union with America, the rest of the former Trust Territory islands are now independent nations "freely associated" with the U.S.
