PNG’S LAE IN NEED OF NEW FIREFIGHTING EQUIPMENT

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, Jan. 5) – The Lae branch of the Papua New Guinea Fire Service Workers Union has called for a replacement of its fire trucks and rescue equipment.

[PIR editor’s note: Lae is located on the northern coast of PNG’s mainland peninsula.]

The union branch representative Roy Katam said yesterday that the rundown conditions of the fire trucks and rescue equipment were a concern to the business, houses, and residents in the city.

Mr. Katam said that the PNG Fire Service operations in Lae must be boosted by new trucks and equipment to effectively fight fires in the city.

He said that there is currently six fire trucks but only one is in good condition while the rest needed urgent repairs.

Mr. Katam said that among the fleet of fire trucks is a new one donated recently to the Fire Services in Lae but it is not running because of technical problems.

He said Lae city needed more than one vehicle to attend to fires so there is an urgent need to replace the old ones.
