HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, March 26) – Former Solomon Islands government minister Stephen Paeni has been fined SB$1,000 [US$143] by the Leadership Code Commission for misconduct in office.

Leadership Code Commission (LCC) Chairman Emmanuel Kouhota said Mr Paeni was fined following an investigation in relation to his drunken and disorderly behaviour at a formal function at Honiara Hotel last year.

Mr Kouhota said this kind of conduct if done by any ordinary person may not seem serious but for a leader or a government minister it is a different matter.

"The standard of conduct expected of them is higher and leaders have an obligation to avoid conducts that may allow their integrity to be called into question or demeaning to their office and position or which may bring to the reputation of the government of Solomon Islands into disrepute," Mr Kouhota said.

The incident involving Mr Paeni was reported in Solomon Star last year.
