CHINA TO BUILD VANUATU HEADQUARTERS FOR MSG

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (The National, April 4) – China is to fund the construction of a building for the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat in Vanuatu.

This was revealed during the MSG foreign ministers meeting last month.

Papua New Guinea Foreign Affairs Minister Sir Rabbie Namaliu said the construction would begin later this year and should be completed by next year.

Sir Rabbie, who is the current MSG chairperson, also said three new positions for the Melanesian Spearhead Group secretariat in Port Vila would be advertised soon. He said the secretariat would advertise for a legal counsel, an economic planning officer and a personal assistant.

"The screening process will take place at the Senior Officials Meeting in the Solomon Islands and officers should begin duties in the third quarter of 2006."

MSG member countries have also agreed to be vigilant in submitting their financial contributions.

The MSG is made up of Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.
