Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

Bravo to Dr. Transform Aqorau for his powerful statement against the rampant corruption that is destroying Solomon Islands.

How can the trusted politicians and civil servants of Solomon Islands look their neighbors in the eye or shake their hands? They are stealing from their neighbors. They do not belong in the same community. The moment the corrupt official decides to take advantage of his position of influence he becomes a thief.

Let there be no misunderstanding. Public office does not provide any form of entitlement to steal. It presents the official with an opportunity to serve and to show his or her true character.

To those who have the opportunity to abuse their authority, I would say, be strong and do your best. Resist the obvious temptation to steal from your friends and neighbors; from the people who trust you with the future of the Solomon Islands.

He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands that he may have something to share with those in need.
