TAIWAN RELEASES $735,000 FOR PACIFIC PROJECTS

SUVA, Fiji (Pacific Forum Secretariat, May 17) Eight Pacific regional organisations have received US$735,000 from Taiwan as part of an aid package covering 32 projects. The assistance was originally announced last October and handed over today at the Forum Secretariat by Taiwan’s Trade Representative in Suva, Fiji, Mr Sherman Kuo.

Taiwan has assured its support for the Pacific Plan which reflects the Forum four goals of economic growth, sustainable development, good governance and security.

The eight organisations are part of the ten-member Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific (CROP). The latest assistance is shared by:

Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency – US$80,000

Fiji School of Medicine – US$30,000

Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat – US$210,000

Secretariat of the Pacific Community – US$238,000

Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme – US$30,000

South Pacific Board for Educational Assessment – US$15,000

South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission – US$80,000

University of the South Pacific – US$52,449
