KOROR, Palau (Palau Horizon, May 26) – There are over 30 Palauans serving the U.S. Army who are stationed at Fort Hood in Texas.

Palau State Minister Temmy Shmull, who was in the U.S. recently, said he visited the U.S. Army base in Texas.

"We toured the base and met some of the Palauans stationed there," Shmull said, adding that he is proud of the Palauan soldiers. "They know what they want. They’ve instilled good discipline into themselves."

Shmull said he is encouraging other young Palauan students to apply to service academies and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the American armed forces.

He said a son of Vincent Remeliik, Culum is going to be deployed to Iraq for six months.

Culum’s elder son, Edgar, has just returned from one-year tour of duty in Iraq.

Shmull said Edgar Culum told him that being in the middle of a war was not easy but "I went there to do my job."

The soldier’s father, Vincent Culum, was with Shmull when the minister visited the Army base.
