HONIARA, Solomon Islands (SIBC, June 17) – People in and around Rohinari in west Are Are will soon have a coconut milling project.

Called the Houropo Coconut Mill, the company promises a lot of income for coconut farmers in the area.

[PIR editor’s note: Rohinari is on Santa Isabel Island, which is north of Guadalcanal and West of Malaita in the Solomon Islands.]

Paskale Oritaimae of the Mo'ore tribe which owns the mill told Leni Dalavera that the new development comes with new technology and will produce a lot of new things.

Mr Oritaimae says one of these will be cheap soap and cooking oil among others.

Mr Dalavera quotes Oritaimae as saying the local coconut agent will provide training and technical experience to start off the operation.

Mr Oritaimae says the project is funded by the European Union at a cost of 85-thousand dollars and will be administered by the department of Agriculture.

He also urges the government to provide economic assistance to such operations because they would use already existing abundant products such as coconuts.
