SAMOA CHURCH LEADER CALLS FOR BAN ON GAYS

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (RNZI, July 13) – Church officials in Samoa say that they have no right to demand the Government ban homosexuality in the country.

The National Council of Churches made the comment after Pastor Viliamu Mafo’e of the Worship Centre Church called for the Government to forbid same sex couples.

The Worship Centre Church - one of the fastest growing churches in the country - says leaders should do more to stop homosexuality from spreading.

The National Council says that the Government shares the council’s objections to homosexuality. But its general secretary, the Reverend Fepai Kolia, says calling for a ban is beyond it.

"We could not call for a ban but we know it was an issue from history," Kolia said. "And we never aproached the government to ban because that’s beyond our own administration."

Kolia says the bible condemns homosexuality, which is a western value.
