PORT MORESBY, PNG (The National, July 26)—A baby is recovering in Buka Hospital after he was critically wounded in the face from gunshots.

The eight-month-old boy was hit in the face during an ambush in South Bougainville, and pellets from the gunshot smashed away part of his nose. Five people were killed in the ambush last weekend.

Relatives at the hospital told The National last night that the baby was with his dad at the time of the attack at Wisae in the Konou constituency. His dad was killed.

The mother was unharmed, and is with the baby at the hospital.

Sources in Buka said police trying to investigate the attack were stopped by members of the BRA, who said they would handle it themselves.
