SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, July 26)—Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase says he is unaware of claims by the Fiji Labour Party that the contract for the Indian Sugar Technical Mission has been cancelled.

Speaking from Lau today, Qarase told FBCL he had not discussed anything about the sugar industry reform with FLP leader Mahendra Chaudhry.

Qarase said he expected to be briefed on the matter when he returned to Suva tomorrow.

Chaudhry claims the contract for the Indian Sugar Technical Mission to restructure Fiji’s sugar industry has been cancelled.

He said he had been informed that the Fiji Sugar Corporation had decided it would take on the role of the Mission instead.

Chaudhry questioned the FSC over the decision saying he could not see the Corporation effectively doing the work the Mission was contracted to do.

He also asked why the alleged cancellation was not publicized.

FSC acting chief executive Abdul Shamsher was in a board meeting and could not be reached for a comment.
