FIJI’S SAVUSAVU TO GET SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Aug. 17) – The Fiji cabinet has approved the construction of the Savusavu Town Sewerage Treatment Plant after a submission was made by the Minister for Public Utilities Robin Irwin.

It also approved that the site of the plant be subjected to an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) study.

Irwin informed Cabinet on Tuesday, that for the past 14 years, Savusavu had endeavored to get a town sewerage scheme.

"The previously crystal clear water of Nakama Creek, has now reached levels of fecal pollution that render it unsafe to swim in or eat the shellfish on the reef and the odor in many parts of the town is unacceptable,'' he said.

"Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) carried out from 1987 to 1992 by private developers and the Water & Sewerage Department confirm the worsening situation."
