HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Aug. 31) – Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare is leading a delegation today for the ROC [Republic of China] -Pacific Islands Summit to be held in Palau next Monday.

The summit will be attended by Taiwan’s President Chen Shui-bien and the head of governments of ROC’s allies in the Pacific, namely Solomon Islands, Nauru, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Tuvalu.

Also traveling with the Prime Minister are Foreign Affairs Minister Patteson Oti and Health Minister Clay Forau Soalaoi.

The health minister is attending a health summit that will coincide with the ROC-Pacific Islands Summit in Palau.

Sogavare is expected to deliver two separate speeches during the summit that would reaffirm Solomon Islands commitment to its relationship with ROC.

At the close of the summit the leaders will sign a communiqué that will specify a number of areas to be targeted by Taiwan in its bilateral assistance to its Pacific allies.

The Solomon Islands delegation will travel to Taiwan, where a number of bilateral agreements are expected to be signed.
