SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, September 10) – Australia has agreed to help Fiji improve the way it conducts elections, says Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.

Qarase said he had positive talks on the matter with his Australia counterpart John Howard this week.

"Australia has pledged assistance to the election office. He wants us to let them know what assistance is required," said Qarase.

Fiji's municipal election office will be merged with the State election office. Qarase said that it needs to be upgraded in capability well before the next general election in 2011.

Qarase said that Australia has also agreed to send at least one expert to assist in setting up Fiji's sugar research institution.

The Fiji Prime Minister returns to Fiji today.
